life lately & happy post #3

(A rose photo that didn't make the cut for my last post, for lack of other photos...)

The last few days have been full of ups and downs and I really haven't had time to think about blogging up until today, so I thought I'd combine this appreciative post with a little chat about my life lately. So, the difficult subject first. My grandmother (my father's mother) passed away last Friday, which was a real horrible shock. She was one of the kindest and loveliest persons I've ever known, always so bright and positive. I don't want to get too personal on the internet so I'm not going to go into more detail, but to sum it up she was an amazing person who is incredibly missed by so many. Losing her was tough.

....but life goes on. After having spent the weekend at my dad's place, I went to Stockholm on Sunday evening to stay with my aunt (my mum's sister, not my dad's). My other aunt joined us for a bit as well, and we had a light dinner while chatting about this and that. I then spent the night, which was the original purpose, because on Monday morning I had booked a barista class! I've been toying with the idea of doing something like that for a while as I've always thought it seems like so much fun. I would also love to work extra in a café and think that it might be a good merit to have. So a couple of weeks ago I booked a beginner class! It was held at Johan & Nyström - an award-winning coffee roasting company and coffee shop. Their concept is to really focus on the whole process; from the farmer and the bean, to the roasting and then to the brewing, and to roast coffee beans of real quality in the best possible way. The course was incredibly interesting and I learnt so much! Did you know that coffee is a berry? I didn't! I learnt about the cultivation, the harvest, the preparation, and then finally how to handle an espresso machine, brew a perfect espresso, froth milk perfectly and make different coffee drinks. It was a lot of fun!

This is the coffee shop where the class was held. It's located in the Southern part of Stockholm, and I highly recommend it if you're ever in Stockholm! The interior is really nice (like Starbucks but more exclusive and personal), their coffee is delicious and their treats seem delicious as well.

So, onto what I've appreciated the last week or so:

- Having such lovely people around me. The weekend was tough, but on the bright side it made me really realise how important it is to be appreciative and thankful of the people in my life - and to show it.

- Not working anymore! Yeah, I'm a lazybum... but really, working in thick workwear trousers (you know, the ones worn by painters, mechanics, builders and so on) in 25-30 degrees and sunshine is not fun. Anyway, I'm enjoying having a few weeks off again before uni, especially since my Japan based sister is coming home in less than two weeks!

- That the tomatoes on my tomato plant are finally starting to ripe! I bought it back in April and I've been patiently watering it everyday since. A little over a month ago, green tomatoes started appearing, but not until now have they showed any signs of changing colour! I'm looking forward to eating the first one any day now.

- Having the time and energy to be productive in the kitchen again. Today I made granola (recipe coming!) and almond butter and tomorrow I'm going to bake some bread with my trusty sourdough (which is around three years old, by the way!). I just love making edible things myself, for some reason. It's relaxing yet productive, and simply a lot of fun.

What about you? How has your week been?
